In my last post, I shared something that often surprises parents:

Reading struggles aren’t just about reading skills.

They’re also about:

  • Focus

  • Confidence

  • How a child thinks about what they’re reading

So the next question becomes:

What actually helps?

 A Simple, Powerful Approach

Over time, through my work with students, I developed a structured approach that supports both reading skills and confidence.

It’s called the H.E.A.R.T.™ Framework.

This approach helps students not only learn how to read—but also how to:

  • Stay focused

  • Make meaning

  • Express their thinking

  • Build confidence

❤️ What Does H.E.A.R.T.™ Stand For?

The H.E.A.R.T.™ Framework is made up of five simple steps:

  • H — Highlight

  • E — Engage

  • A — Apply

  • R — Read

  • T — Think

These steps follow the natural way the brain processes reading—from noticing information to truly understanding it.

🔴 H — Highlight (Focus on What Matters)

Many children feel overwhelmed when reading because they try to focus on everything at once.

In this step, students learn how to:

  • Identify the main idea

  • Notice key details

  • Slow down and focus

This builds attention and helps reading feel more manageable.

🟠 E — Engage (Make Meaningful Connections)

Reading starts to make sense when it feels personal.

Students learn how to:

  • Ask questions

  • Make connections

  • Think about characters and ideas

This is where comprehension begins to deepen.

🟡 A — Apply (Practice and Express Thinking)

This is where students begin to do something with what they’ve read.

They might:

  • Write a sentence or response

  • Explain their thinking

  • Practice a skill they’ve learned

This step builds confidence and independence.

🟢 R — Read (Build Fluency and Confidence)

Fluency is more than just reading quickly—it’s about reading with ease and expression.

Students practice:

  • Smooth reading

  • Expression

  • Confidence when reading out loud

As fluency improves, so does confidence.

🔵 T — Think (Develop Real Understanding)

This is where everything comes together.

Students begin to:

  • Think more deeply about what they read

  • Form opinions

  • Make real-world connections

This is what turns a reader into a thinker.

 Why This Approach Works

Instead of focusing on just one skill at a time, the H.E.A.R.T.™ Framework connects everything:

  • Reading skills

  • Thinking skills

  • Confidence

  • Emotional growth

So students aren’t just getting through reading…

They’re actually understanding it—and feeling successful while they do.

What This Looks Like for Your Child

When students use this approach consistently, you often start to see:

  • Less frustration

  • Better focus

  • Stronger comprehension

  • More confidence

  • A greater willingness to try

And that’s when reading starts to feel different.

A Simple Truth

Your child doesn’t need more random practice.

They need a clear, structured way to approach reading—one that supports both skills and confidence.

✨ What Comes Next

In my next post, I’ll break down the first step—Highlight—and show you simple ways you can help your child focus and understand what they’re reading at home.

Why This Approach Works

Why Reading and Confidence Must Be Taught Together If we want children to become strong readers, we have to look beyond phonics charts, leveled texts, and comprehension questions. Reading is not jus
